Bay City Visions is open

bay-city-visions-show-signI’ve still got some minor work to do, and 1 more piece to hunt down, but consider the Bay City Visions show open for your viewing pleasure throughout the month of December!

I’m very pleased with the overall quality of the entrants in the show, which includes SL photography from:

  • Marianne McCann
  • Sunn Thunders
  • Poid Mahovlich
  • Connie Arida
  • Ferba Ferraris
  • Mack Brezoianu
  • Deuxmarie Tolsen
  • Corcosman Voom
  • Often Hird
  • Special Jewell
  • Jazz Calhern
  • BlueGin Yifu
  • Princess Ivory
  • Wildstar Beaumont
  • DeltaDharmaDawn Aubret
  • Shadoe Landman
  • Tary Allen
  • Harris Givens
  • Gavin Hird
  • Davinna Glitter
  • Carlotta Ceawlin
  • Oona Pinion
  • Mab MacMoragh

Callipygian Christiansen and I also put some thematically-appropriate pieces up, but we’re not included in the contest judging for obvious reasons…we’re contest judges.

Contest?  What’s this about a contest?  Indeed, ’tis true.  A 5 member panel consisting of yours truly; Harper Beresford, photographer and curator; Callipygian Christensen, SL photographer and  Torley Olmstead and Ravenelle Zugzwang, longtime grid figures and advocates/practioners of the inworld photographic arts.  We’re going to take about a week or so and will try to collectively identify the photo that “Captures the essence of any or all of the 12 Bay City sims in each photographer’s unique style, whether in an unretouched SL snapshot image or one retouched in a graphics program.”  Contest winner gets free exhibit space at the Second Arts inworld gallery for a month following the conclusion of the exhibit and a RL copy of a book produced using the images from the exhibit.

Expect a special event to celebrate the show and announce the winner.  I’m working out the details – an announcement will be forthcoming.  But don’t let that stop you…come by and see the Bay City visions of some of Second Life’s creative community!

That AM Radio…

Does he ever slow down?

While he has his other giant builds, like The Refuge & The Expansion, the build at the University of Kentucky, and his lake house build, he goes and makes a beautiful, seasonal (and temporary) “mini-build” in the IBM sandbox:

I was feeling a little impish last night, and this tranquil scene cried out for some Viggishness.  And here’s what I came up with:

AM appeared to enjoy it…in fact, he named the photo, “You’ll shoot your eye out, and frag. Hard.”  I can live with that.

Early Christmas decorations at Second Arts

With many thanks to cark Milos, who gave me this incredible ribbon for the tree, I’ve got the Christmas tree up at Second Arts on the “plaza” (read: undeveloped land). The tree itself – and the others decorating the rest of the place – is pretty incredible. sculpty branches, particle twinkling lights and a particle shining star at the top. It’s incredible how far SL has come in a couple of years.

Bay City Visions entries due Friday

bay-city-visions-flagThe Bay City Visions show is coming up in December, and those white “Insert Photo Here” signs are slowly filling up the gallery.  If you haven’t entered your photos, now’s the time – deadline for submissions is Friday!

If you want information on how to have your works in the show and enter them in the contest for a free month’s show and a free copy of the RL show book, here’s the scoop.

Following Tary Allen’s great suggestion, I also opened up a Flickr photo group for “Bay City Visions” over the weekend.  We already have over 100 members, and I believe we’re over 10 photos posted to the group.  Some of them are entries in the contest, some aren’t…which is great, as I think a photo group devoted to Bay City can live past any single art show or contest.  The collection of sims has enough going for it, enough creativity and style, that it’s eminently photographable (Is that a word – photographable?).

Anyhoo – get your photos in now!  Time is running out!

Photos from the end of AM Radio’s pier

SL really is a fabulous contemplative, creative  space.  I took a few photos while sitting out over the water…enjoy.

AM Radio’s next build discovered?

Not sure if anyone has seen this build by the prolific and talented AM Radio, but I stumbled upon it while looking for his classic desert build, “The Husk”:

I recognize the house and boat from his May 2008 “The Quiet,” which used the same in a snow scene:

Still, the addition of the deteriorating pier and the radio tower in the midst of all of the water put a new spin on the sense of solitude that is unique to AM’s inworld builds.

AM tells me that the background photo is from Lake Champlain, south of Ferrisburgh, Vermont.

By the way, readers who like AM’s work should also check out his build that is hosted by the University of Kentucky, “Beneath the Tree that Died.”  I know it’s getting some attention, and deservedly so.

Cory Ondrejka’s CSCW 08 Keynote

What a great presentation – really shows off the transformational change suggested by virtual worlds (especially Second Life)!

Enjoying the sunset

Catching a moment at Las Arenas Rosadas, thinking of my RL vacation to come in Mexico this January…. A weekend ends, a week begins. Nice to begin the week with a sense of tranquility!

Bumped into a “Bay City Visions” entrant…

When I logged in, I ran into Connie Sec (SL: Connie Arida) – who was checking out the Second Arts gallery for the first time.  Connie offered two very nice pieces for the “Bay City Visions” show, which will be starting at the end of the month.

There is such wonderful creativity in the SL photographic arts.  Connie and I were swapping notes, and she shared a few examples of her skill, which I will share after the fold…

What a creative marketing idea!

OK, this is worthy of some free publicity:
